Evidence of the fact that globalization is inevitable was the latest Miss America 2014 victory earned by Asian American Nina Davuluri, 24. The gorgeous Eastern Indian made American history by capturing the title. The runner up was also Asian, Crystal Lee.
We are witnessing the embrace of diversity. We are experiencing the metamorphosis of the American ideal. There were very visceral comments made on social networks about the heritage of the newly crowned pageant queen. One of the searing comments called the stunning beauty “Miss 7-11”.

By the mere fact that this occurrence is even a celebratory event speaks to the fact that our country has a very long way to go with regards to race relations in this country despite the fact that it was founded on the beaten backs and forced beds of people of color.
Whenever women of color win these titles many of us are thrust back into the era when black people huddled around radios and television sets to hear the verdict of any champion fighting on ALL of our behest. The days of holding our breath to receive honors for competitions that uphold American stereotypical perspectives have not fully disappeared.
We are still holding our breath to see if panels will do the right thing versus what standards the sponsors want to perpetuate.
