For the past week I’ve been riding public transportation. In an effort to reduce my carbon footprint and more importantly to save some money at the gas tank, the decision to subject self to the wide world of ratchet has commensed.
Ironically, the experience thus far with the bus system has not been nearly as bad as I thought. As a matter of fact the indignation that I realized I had, has since been realized. The realization will invariably produce some type of change within my perception however, it was necessary to park the gas guzzling SUV and walk among the people within my community. For the sake of appearances, comfort and/or status-what is keeping us from seeing the actuality of our world?
The plush heated seats have been temporarily sacrificed as this ‘personal social experiment’ proceeds. It has been interesting to truly observe the other side of my perceptions. The brown brothers that occupy my community are a determined hard working brood. The tanned reddened sun blessed skin resonates in the visual memory of Native American relatives from old photos in grandma’s hat box storage. The bus route is filled with day laborers pressing their way to their destination with vigilance. The willingness to help and to offer their seats to women and the elderly are concepts that seem foreign to the younger generations of all races.
Those men and women sharing this unknowing sociological research exploration, look at me with the same ‘discovery’. I imagine the thoughts they must have when they see my 6’0 frame boarding and exiting. “She must be Dominican or Puerto Rican”…*laughing*
The morning ride has been pleasant thus far. In those wee morning hours seeing has awakened a new INSIGHT necessary to continue to connect with all types of people for purposes of comprehending the struggles.
There is nothing worse than an uninformed vocal advocate. What are the issues? Who are the people? What are their struggles? Why do they endure their hardships dutifully? What can be learned from others that may or may not have been instilled previously? After observing, engaging and interacting with others-how can one improve self?
