Washington, DC – On Saturday, March 2, 2013 the next team of teenage poets representing the District at national and international poetry slam festivals will be selected through a performance poetry competition known as a “slam.” After months of practice, writing workshops, qualifying bouts, and inspiring performances in a grueling Semi-Finals competition at the National Portrait Gallery, the final 12 student competitors have been selected for the 2013 GRAND SLAM FINALS. These students have shown great skill, poise, and mastery of words in delivering their original poetry in the most moving and passionate manner possible.
The GRAND SLAM FINALS takes place 4 – 6pm, at the historic GALA Hispanic Theatre in the heart of the vibrant Columbia Heights neighborhood. In addition to two rounds of poetry performances by exceptional high school students the Finals will also feature two prominent adult poets. Two-time National Slam Champion recently featured on TV One’s Verses & Flow, Carlos Robson, and assistant coach of the 2013 DC Youth Slam Team, a teacher, CantoMundo Fellow, and New York native, Elizabeth Acevedo, will perform in between rounds of slam.
Hosted by two-time DC Slam Champion, Busboys and Poets open mic host, member of DC’s Beltway Poetry Slam Team, and assistant coach for the DC Youth Slam Team, Pages Matam, the GRANDSLAM FINALS will use judges from the audience to determine the winners and crown the 2013 DC Youth Slam Champion. Hundreds of young writers and performers from all around DC, Maryland, and Virginia have been working to make it to Finals, building a culture and community of literacy, art, and social change through after-school poetry clubs run by the nonprofit organization Split This Rock. This summer the DC Youth Slam Team will represent Split This Rock and the District at the Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Slam Festival in Chicago.
