This documentary series is based on a young man by the name of Nev who entered an online dating courtship only to find out that the woman he thought he was wooing was NOT a beautiful 90 lbs. brunette, but instead a 350 lbs woman who was too insecure about her weight to venture out into the dating circuit without the shield of a computer screen.
Though weight was a ‘flaw’ that was commonly concealed, others included: ‘excess’ children, marriage, sexuality, and height insecurities.
What was/is striking about this social commentary is that the individuals who are uncovered as the other part of the online relationship always had some insecurity about their authentic self that made online communication more of a connective reality. It was also interesting that the spin that most of these individuals had conjured, bred deception. Lies that the other often fell head over heels in love over but then once they saw that the person had lied about who they were, it was difficult to discern whether the wounded were hurt because they lied about the physical part of themselves or that they had gone to such lengths to lie.
It was painful to watch the stripping of hope. Many seek online connections because they have been met with horrible fortune on their own.
There were three episodes viewed out of however many MTV filmed.
