As a woman. As a female collegiate athlete this story is dual edged. It is wonderful that this person feels comfortable enough to come out; however, not at the expense of “his” team.
There is a synapsis that requires awareness of the whole and not just self, when endeavoring to be apart of any team structure. To elevate ones own personal gains over and above the team is a heinous crime against the team code.
The issue is not that this person has selected to enable his perceived authentic self to emerge from the entrapment of its original form. The issue is that the person has single handedly taken focus from the arduous task of just being a student athlete. The individual has successfully created a whirlwind of media that will concentrate more on the gender/sex question than on the possible star power of the whole unit. This season is a wash for the Colonials. It is sad but true. The momentum has swirled into something other than the discipline, dedication, self sacrifice, pain, victory and self discovery that ALL players have journeyed to achieve.
According to reliable sources, this player may not even be academically eligible to play the game at the University. This fact makes this entire scenario even more disheartening because all of the sheer cirque of it all-for what? She may be a pioneer for the transgender movement and may
her his journey be as steadfast and as enduring as those WOMEN who blazed the trail of athletics to get to a point where women could have their own league.
The struggle for WOMEN to finally be treated as equals in an arena that long shut us out, has now been given fodder that supports their initial reasons for not wanting us there in the first place. Many of the reasons included but were not limited to perspectives like : “The women will become less feminine”… “I don’t want my daughter to turn gay”…or my favorite “They’ll (women) will want to be men”. Whatever course this young “fella” wants to chart, it needn’t be at the expense of the blood, sweat, tears, pain, sacrifice and indignations hurled while REAL WOMEN TOILED. It would have been just as significant if this young person had found their voice post college , in an arena that had also been earned.
The real history would have been made if this young person had managed to make it on the MEN’S TEAM!!!!!
The team will support the one, but will the one sacrifice self for the greater good of the whole?
