Amist the enormous devastation the rise of the human spirit has been witnessed. Despite not having a place to reside, nor food or medicine the resilient people of Haiti are banding together to overcome yet another natural catastrophe. This time the world is rallying and promising to come to the aid of the tiny part of the big island that also includes the Dominican Republic. Many efforts to donate funds to purchase the badly needed supplies have already begun.
Wyclef Jean notorious Haitian Ambassador and advocate has made significant strides in obtaining the support from entertainers, politicians and other influentials who can help MOVE on providing aid to a country that is so very close to the United States with Key West, Florida being a rocks throw away.
In response to please for help there have been mixed emotions from various groups. However, at the end of the day, there are people in need of our help and that is all that matters. In recent months, the Phillipines, Indonesia, as well as several islands have sustained terrible suffrage at the hands of mother nature. Terrential downpours have continually flood Southern Asia. Many lives have been lost from 2009 until the beginning of this new year.
What really needs to be addressed is the disposal of the decomposing bodies. The rotting flesh threatens to poison any remaining drinking water sources as well as to create in environment that could potentially create disease and famine. What needs to be understood is how and why the earth seems to be doing flip flops to the point that the very existance of cultures may be lost due to the sudden upheaval of small villages, communities and towns. The understanding of how the ecological disruption will impact the rest of the world has not been uncovered yet either, perhaps because no one will truly know until the impacts are felt.
What IS known is that Haiti has been struggling for years to cast away it’s sordid past oppressions and step into an age of technology, growth and ascension! The best place to start is from the ground up! This should be seen as an opportunity to put into place those things that have kept so many of the people of Haiti oppressed in the first place. Quality education that includes 21st century advances, safe housing programs, effectual health and medical access, consistant sanitation and electrical systems that are available to ALL people, instituting a government that is more concerned with overall equality and one less centered on extreme and abject exclusion. From the embers of fire shall emerge a Phoenix, if given the opportunity to use the accumulated resources to BUILD and not pilfer.
Our blessings, condolences, and prayers to all of the Haitian people. Our encouragement, strength and support to Wyclef Jean and former President Bill Clinton in undertaking the task of rebuilding from wreckage. We too must be willing to mobilize to help where necessary! Are you prepared to lend a helping hand, in whatever form?
